Cowley Tigers Baseball Staff
Dave Burroughs begins his 21st season as head coach of the Tigers. He has led the Tigers to 11 Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division titles in the past 13 seasons, and five trips to the NJCAA World Series in the past 11 seasons. The Ketchum, Okla., native has guided the Tigers to some impressive seasons of late. Cowley is 540-199 (.731 winning percentage) in the last 12 seasons and has won at least 34 games in each of the last 15 seasons. And yet another amazing statistic: Since 1992, Burroughs has led the Tigers to the Eastern Sub-Regional championship Saturday every year but one. He is just 17 wins shy of 800 for his career. Burroughs’ philosophy is simple: Recruit good players, teach them what you want them to know, help them reach their potential, and stay out of the way of progress. Burroughs himself was an outstanding athlete. Upon graduating from Ketchum High School in 1975, he signed to play baseball at the University of Oklahoma as a catcher. But that same year he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals organization and decided to forfeit his amateur playing status. He played for the Royals’ Rookie League team in Sarasota, Fla., with the likes of U.L. Washington, Clint Hurdle, Steve Busby and other future Major League stars. He left baseball two years later and enrolled at Northeastern Oklahoma College at Tahlequah, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1982. From the fall of 1982 to the spring of 1984, Burroughs served as assistant coach at Bacone College in Oklahoma. And from 1985-86, he was an assistant at Northeastern State at Tahlequah. He left baseball for a year prior to coming to Cowley in 1988. Dave and his wife Vickie are the parents of five children: Derek 20, Erin 18, Blake 16, Dylan 14, Rachael 12. Coach Burroughs can be reached at (620) 441-5225 or by e-mail: burroughsdav@cowley.edu.
Darren Burroughs begins his 19th season as an assistant to his brother Dave. He has helped coach the Tigers to 11 Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division titles in the past 13 seasons, and five trips to the NJCAA World Series in the past 11 seasons. He graduated from Vinita High School in Vinita, Okla., in 1978. There he was an all-stater and played for the Oklahoma All-Star Team in what is now called the Sun Belt Classic. Darren was a fifth-round draft choice out of high school and went on to play 10 years of professional baseball, including six years at the Triple A level. He participated in three major league spring trainings. Darren and his wife Carolyn are the parents of two children: Brent, age 15, and Brylee, 10. Coach Burroughs can be reached at (620) 441-5256 or by e-mail: burroughsdar@cowley.edu.
Scott Camien begins his first year as an assistant coach. Coach Camien brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and expertise to the Tiger Program. Camien will serve as the infield instructor, a hitting instructor, and will coordinate in-state recruiting. He will also coordinate all weight training programs. Other duties include serving as the Dorm Manager and assist in the Wellness Center. Coach Camien’s collegiate career began at Allen County Community College where he was an All-Conference shortstop. At the conclusion of his sophomore season he declined a contract with the New York Mets to transfer to Arkansas State University. Personal reasons brought Coach Camien closer to home where he concluded his career at Emporia State University and received All-Conference honors. There he obtained his B.S. degree in Physical Education and is currently working on his Master’s in Physical Education through ESU. Scott and his wife Lacey are parents of one child:
Bailey, age 4. Coach Camien can be reached at (620) 441-5332 or by e-mail: camiens@cowley.edu |
