Former three-sport athlete going into Tiger Hall of
Fame
LeRoy Call was a multi-sport standout and an All-American
football player at ACJC in 1960-61.
Call played football, basketball and ran track at ACJC. As quarterback
for the Tiger football team he was an All-Conference selection as a freshman
and named an All-American as a sophomore.
He was also a two-year letterman in basketball and
track, and was the team captain in all three sports during his sophomore
season.
Call was surprised to hear he was going to be inducted into the Tiger
Athletic Hall of Fame.
“I did not even know they had one,” Call said. “It’s
an honor.”
After his time at ACJC, Call went on to earn a scholarship
to play football at the University of Kansas, but a knee injury ended
his playing career during his junior season. Following his junior year,
he transferred to Northeastern Oklahoma College, where he earned his
degree.
After college, Call went on to coach basketball, baseball,
football and track at the high school level.
Prior to coming to ACJC, he played
football, basketball, baseball and ran track in high school. He spent
his first two years at Sedan High School before spending his last two
years at Copan (Okla.) High School. He was an all-conference
performer in football and basketball each of his two years at Copan
High School, and competed at the state track meet in the 440-meter
run as a senior.
Ben Cleveland, former football coach at ACJC, contacted Call about coming
to the school.
“I visited with Mr. Cleveland and came on a visit
to the school,” Call said. “I liked the school so I decided
to come. Another reason I came to ACJC was I was able to participate
in all three sports.”
Call recalls beating Miami (Okla.) in football during
his sophomore year as one of his fondest memories of his time at ACJC.
The win marked the first time the Tigers had beaten Miami.
Call credits coach Cleveland and Reece Bohanon (former
ACJC track coach) as being major influences to him during his time at
the school.
Call and his wife, Sheri, have a son, H.C. Call enjoys playing golf nearly
every day.
