
Sonny Maynard was a
two-time basketball All-American at Cowley in 1956 and 1957. He also
earned All-Region VI both seasons, and was voted Most Inspirational
Player for the Tigers. He is eighth on Cowley’s all-time career scoring chart with 996
points. Up until the 1999-2000 season, Maynard held the record (with
fellow inductee Del Heidebrecht) for most free throws in a single game
with 16. He is a member of the Johnson County, Southwestern College,
Oklahoma (Conoco) AAU, and Missouri Valley AAU halls of fame. He was
a member of national champion senior citizens softball team in 1999.
That same year, Maynard was a member of a senior citizens basketball
team that finished second in the nation. From 1959-69, Maynard served
as director of recreation at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center.
He was an instructor, coach and counselor at Johnson County from 1969-94.
