Mike Watters

Winfield native Mike Watters was head men’s tennis coach at Cowley from 1970-1984, and his teams won 15 consecutive Region VI and Jayhawk Conference championships. In May 2000, he was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame. Watters was chairman of the Natural Science Department for 21 years before becoming a dean at College of Lake County in Illinois in 1994. Watters was proud of the fact that his Tiger tennis teams were comprised primarily of local talent. His 1974 team, which finished second in the nation, was Gary Cannon of Winfield, and Wayne Marsh, Marty Gilliland, and David Jones, all from Arkansas City.
