Tigers outslug No. 16-ranked Hutchinson 21-20
In a mid-week game that featured 42 hits, 17 walks, and 41 runs scored, the Cowley College baseball team rallied for a 21-20 victory over Jayhawk West leading Hutchinson Community College on Tuesday in Ark City.
Cowley (10-12) scored four runs in the first inning and seven more in the third to lead the No. 16-ranked Blue Dragons 11-3. However, Hutchinson scored nine runs in the fourth inning and went on to score 15 unanswered to lead 18-11.
With the teams combining for 20 extra base hits, the Tigers scored three runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh, to pull within 20-17.
Freshmen Carter Rose and Riley Lile (3-1) came on to pitch 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the Tigers, which allowed Skyler Branam to hit a game-tying three-run triple in the bottom of the eighth, and then Quinn Groebl doubled home Logan Smith with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Cowley prevailed 21-20.
The loss snapped Hutchinson's 11-game win streak, leaving them 23-4 on the season.
Cowley had nine players record at least two hits in the victory, led by Quinn Groebl, who went 4-for-6 with two extra-base hits and four runs batted in. Branam added three hits and five runs batted in, while Josiah Sems went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three batted in.
Cowley will play a doubleheader at Highland Community College on Thursday at 1 p.m. before hosting the Scotties in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1. Highland is 5-18 overall and 1-7 in the Jayhawk Conference.
