Cowley baseball tees off on Coffeyville in doubleheader sweep
Pounding out 17 extra base hits to go along with a pair of solid starts on the mound, the Cowley College baseball team swept a doubleheader against Coffeyville 11-4 and 22-3 on a windy Thursday afternoon in Arkansas City.
Cowley, winners of seven of its last eight games, improves to 16-13 overall and 7-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
"We pitched pretty well with the wind blowing like crazy," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "The guys did a good job of staying hooked up at the plate throughout the day."
Coffeyville (12-20) falls to 3-11 in conference play.
Having already hit for the cycle earlier this season, Cowley sophomore Drake Fittro nearly did it again in game one, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, home run, and three runs batted in.
Leftfielder Skyler Branam doubled twice and went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Logan Smith hit his eighth home run of the season in the victory.
Keaton Humphrey improved his record to 3-1 after allowing three hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings. Humphrey struck out six and walked two.
Coffeyville's Yale Griffiths (2-2) took the loss after surrendering 10 hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.
The Tigers went on to score in every inning of the seven-inning run-rule win of game two, including scoring five runs in the second and fifth innings and putting up an eight-spot in the sixth.
Fittro continued to terrorize opposing pitching by belting two homers and driving in six in the 22-3 win of game two. Fittro is now batting .400 with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in.
"Drake has really matured as a player and works hard at his craft," Burroughs said.
First baseman Quinn Groebl had four of Cowley's 20 hits, while adding his sixth home run of the season.
Keegan Robertson (1-1) earned his first win, allowing six hits and two runs in five innings. Stetson Etheridge and Cameron Mock followed Robertson on the mound.
Coffeyville's Coen Miller, the first of four Red Raven pitchers, took the loss after allowing seven runs in two innings.
Cowley will attempt to sweep the four-game series when they play a doubleheader at Coffeyville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"Coffeyville will play hard. We have got to continue to play well and take care of business."
