Tigers win third in a row with 83-66 victory over Colby
Getting a season-high 15 points from freshman Aven Mboule on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range, the Cowley College men’s basketball team shot 55.7 percent from the floor in an 83-66 victory over Colby on Saturday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The victory, Cowley's third in a row, improves the Tigers' record to 14-7 overall. Cowley remains in fifth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 9-6. Colby (5-17) remains in a tie with Pratt for last place in the conference with a mark of 3-13.
Mboule had not appeared in a game since January 7 and had scored only 12 points on the season entering Saturday's contest.
With his team tied at 24-24, Mboule broke the tie with his first three-pointer of the game. Mboule would go on to finish 3-of-3 from three-point range during an 18-5 run to close the half.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Colby's DJ Cason pulled the Trojans within 51-42 with 15:45 remaining. However, that would be as close as Colby would get as Mboule's fifth three-pointer increased the Tigers' lead to 65-48 and, Cowley would go on to lead by as many as 22 points (74-52) in the 17-point win.
"Aven came in and provided a big boost," Cowley head coach Donnie Jackson said. "We needed to find that spark, and I was happy Aven did that for the team."
Cowley got 35 points of bench production, and all 10 players who saw action scored in the victory. The Tigers were led by Roman Miller's 16 points, while Leslie Owens Jr. added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Colby's Aliou Diallo led three Trojans in double figures with 20 points.
Cowley will take to the road to face conference foe Coffeyville Community College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Red Ravens are 14-8 overall and 8-8 in the Jayhawk Conference.
"We will be going into a hornet's nest on Wednesday," Jackson said. "We expect an absolute dog fight."
