Tiger tennis players have strong finishes at the ITA Cup
Advancing to play at the ITA Cup in Rome, GA, the Cowley College tennis teams were represented by Tiger singles player Haruki Okude and the women’s doubles tandem of Naghely Garcia and Cynthia Wanjala.
Freshman Haruki Okude from Fukui, Japan, placed fifth in singles after losing to Bakersfield's Mateusz Lipczynski 6-3, 6-2.
Garcia and Wanjala won a pair of matches to advance to the finals in doubles. The duo lost to a team from Hillsborough Community College and finished as runners-up.
"It was a great tournament," Cowley head coach Marcel Miasato said. "We still have a lot to learn, but I was happy to see Cynthia, Naghely, and Haruki fighting on the tennis court. They didn't play well in the first match; they were a bit nervous, but as the tournament progressed, they were getting better and better. And they were able to play a really high level of tennis."
Tyler Junior College's Daniel Marincas won the men's singles title after defeating Pratt's Kenneth Rabinad Vila 7-6, 7-5 in the championship match.
