Cowley track and field athletes split up for competitions in Missouri
Taking split squads to compete on Friday and Saturday at Missouri Southern University and Northwest Missouri State, the nationally ranked Cowley College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams achieved five national qualifying performances and heat wins.
Lady Tiger freshman Linda Filipova's school-record time of 2:56.92 in the 1,000-meter run held at Northwest Missouri State highlighted the list of performances. Filipova's time broke the previous record set by Sasha Elizondo (2:59.24) in the 2020 season. In the race, Euvia Bennett also achieved a national qualifying time of 2:56.96. Other national qualifiers included Alexis Realland (1,000-meter run), Marta Herrero-Lombardo (1,000-meter run), Jasmine Calvo (5,000-meter run), Euvia Bennett (1,000-meter run, 800-meter run), and Filipova (800-meter run, mile run).
Realland (2:30.26) ran the second fastest time in school history in the men's 1,000-meter run, as did Euvia Bennett (2:16.15) in the women's 800-meter run.
"It was a very productive weekend across the board," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "We still have a few relays and events that we are on the bubble with, but it was very solid. I am very proud of the way the athletes stepped up to the challenge of doing several events over the course of the weekend and taking advantage of their opportunities."
At Missouri Southern, the squads gained much-needed experience and were led by the Lady Tiger throwers.
"They are continuing to get better and better," Rieth said. "Joshua (Kais) Patton also had a solid shot put throw and narrowly missed hitting a personal best in the weight throw. It was also good to see Jada Schnieders open up in the triple jump.
The Tiger indoor track and field teams will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Ichabod Invite in Topeka, KS.
"I think as a group we just need to keep focusing on ourselves, focusing on doing what we need to do to get better," Rieth said.
