Burnham breaks the Lady Tigers’ record in the pole vault; Tigers compete at Friends Invitational
Breaking a school record that had stood for 16 years, Cowley College freshman Ke’Mauria Burnham continued her incredible season by surpassing Katie Gilmore’s mark in the pole vault while taking part in the Friends University Spring Invitational on Thursday and Friday in Wichita, KS.
Gilmore's previous school record in the pole vault was 12-7 ½. Burnham, who tied Gilmore's school record in the pole vault during the indoor season, cleared 12-8 ¾ at Friends. Fellow freshman Aaliyah Treat established a personal best in the women's pole vault as she cleared 12-0 ¾ in the event.
Sophomore Mayce McDonald also performed well, achieving a national qualifying mark of 155-4 in the women's hammer throw. At the same time, Zuzana Bukova and Kennedy Khamvongsa did well in the 400-meter hurdles.
On the men's side, Brett Clevenger placed third and hit the national qualifying mark in the hammer throw. Sophomore Esteban Boisseau had a triumphant return to the track by finishing second in the 5,000-meter run with a national qualifying time of 14:56.97.
The Tiger outdoor track and field teams came away with 17 new Top-15 marks in program history.
Cowley will now turn its focus to competing at the Grizzly Gold Invite on Friday and Saturday in El Dorado, KS.
"Our whole goal is to just keep things moving in the right direction and to keep building on our small successes," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said.
