Lady Tiger softball team has up and down doubleheader at Dodge City

Playing at Jayhawk West foe Dodge City on Sunday, the Cowley College softball team split a doubleheader. The Lady Tigers run-ruled the Conquistadors 10-2 in game one before losing the nightcap by a score of 7-1.

Cowley is now 6-4 on the season, while Dodge City snapped a seven-game losing streak with the win in game two and is now 2-9.

In game one, Cowley scored six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in the 10-2 win.

"We put pressure on them early in the game but then coasted the whole way after that in the doubleheader," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said.

Sophomore Raelynn Sandlin hit a pair of doubles and drove in five runs, while freshman shortstop Taverli Tennant went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Sophomore Mikah Vann (4-1) earned the win, allowing only one earned run in five innings. Vann struck out seven and walked four.

Dodge City's Anistyn Marcotte (0-3) took the loss, allowing nine runs in three innings.

Game two was a different story for the Tigers as they managed only three hits in the 7-1 defeat.

"Dodge City made adjustments in game two, and we did not," Hoyt said.

Sandlin drove in Cowley's lone run in the loss and has 10 RBI in 10 games.

Dodge City shortstop Elly Tancayo had three of the Conquistadors 11 hits, and Frankie Martens tossed a complete game, allowing only three hits in seven innings.

Ezra Arredondo (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Cowley, allowing nine hits and four earned runs in six innings.

Cowley will be back in action on Monday when they host a doubleheader against Pratt (1-5) at 1 p.m.

"We need to respond better against Pratt," Hoyt said. "We need to control the things we can and put pressure on their defense."
