Scoring 29 runs in only eight innings, the Cowley College softball team made easy work of the Haskell Indian Nations University in a doubleheader played Wednesday at Ed Hargrove Field. The Lady Tigers won the opener 11-0 before taking the nightcap by a score of 18-6.
Cowley improves to 10-4 while Haskell falls to 0-4.
In game one, Oregon State University transfer Taverli Tennant got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning as she powered a three-run homer over the left centerfield fence despite the wind blowing in.
Sophomore right fielder Kanon Goji added a run-scoring single in the second inning as Cowley's lead grew to 4-0.
Krisyana Pellet then doubled leading off the bottom of the third inning and scored on an RBI double by Jamie Molina to increase the lead to 5-0. One batter later, Ezra Arredondo singled home Molina to make the score 6-0. A three-run triple by Goji and an RBI double by Tennant highlighted the seven-run third inning that put Cowley in control at 11-0.
Mikah Vann started on the mound for the Tigers and tossed four scoreless innings, and Alissa Nuno pitched a scoreless fifth to complete the shutout.
In game two, Cowley led 6-0 before Haskell hit a pair of home runs and scored six runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 6-6.
The score would remain tied before Cowley erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and went on to the 18-6 victory.
Freshman Bre Curry went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in, while sophomore Kanon Goji went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Cowley out-hit Haskell 14-8 in the nightcap.
"As a team, I thought we hit very consistently in our lineup; Kanon Goji gave us the spark at the top of the lineup that we needed," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said.
Lady Tiger freshman Madison Baker started on the mound in game two and allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings. Ezra Arredondo relieved Baker on the mound and allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings to earn the victory.
Aubrey Williams pitched a scoreless fifth inning to finish off the win.
"I thought our pitching staff used more of our defense for outs in game two, so it was good to see our defense being strong behind our circle and working together," Hoyt said.
Sophomore catcher Krisyana Pellet continues to swing a hot bat as she went 2-for-4 with a double and four runs batted in. However, it was her work behind the plate that most impressed Hoyt.
"Yaya (Pellet) continues to do a great job with our pitchers and making the correct pitching calls of what we need to throw in certain counts," Hoyt said. "She continues to improve and gain confidence, and that's what you want from that position."
The Lady Tigers will remain home to play a doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on Saturday at 1 p.m.
