Lady Tigers sweep doubleheader from 17th-ranked Seminole State College
After opening the season with a pair of losses at 17th-ranked Seminole State College (OK), the Cowley College softball team avenged those defeats by winning a pair of home games against the Trojans on Wednesday at Ed Hargrove Field by scores of 7-6 and 12-0.
Both teams entered Wednesday's doubleheader with a record of 10-4 as Cowley is now 12-4 and Seminole State falls to 10-6.
"I am proud of how we competed as a team both offensively and defensively," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "The team knew if we could be better than them in all aspects of the game, we would give ourselves a good shot at winning."
In game one, Seminole State's Ava Yocham tripled home Aaliyah Dauman and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kaylee Sallee to give the Trojans a 2-0 first-inning lead.
Paige Scanlin singled leading off the bottom of the third inning against Seminole starting pitcher McKenna Ingram advanced to second on an error before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a two-out single by sophomore Kanon Goji to pull Cowley within 2-1.
Following a walk to Alissa Nuno, Taverli Tennant belted a two-run triple to put the Lady Tigers in front 3-2.
After losing a flyball in the sun and allowing Seminole State's Kaylee Madden to take second on the play, Tiger left-fielder Paige Scanlin threw Madden out at home on a single by Jentrie Gibson to end the inning.
Raelynn Sandlin, Bree Curry, Goji, and Nuno added run-scoring hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase Cowley's lead to 7-2.
Sallee would get two of the runs back for Seminole on a two-run double off Mikah Vann in the top of the fifth inning. Marissa Frolich followed with a run-scoring double to close the gap to 7-5.
The Trojans' Abigail Tovar came on to pitch in the sixth inning and stranded a runner at third.
Down to its final out, Seminole got a solo home run from Mackenzie Kauk to cut Cowley's lead to 7-6. Sallee followed with a ground-rule double, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. With a full count on Frolich, Vann got Frolich to ground out to shortstop to preserve the 7-6 win.
Tennant and Goji had two hits apiece, and Mikah Vann (7-1) allowed eight hits and four earned runs while going the distance on the mound. Vann struck out seven and walked one.
Seminole's McKenna Ingram (5-3) took the loss as she allowed nine hits and seven runs in five innings pitched.
In game two, Cowley scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the third inning to cruise to the 12-0 run-rule win.
Ezra Arredondo (4-1) started game two on the mound for Cowley, allowing three hits and no runs in five innings pitched.
"Mikah and Ezra both did a great job with keeping their hitters guessing, and that comes with Yaya (Krisyana Pellet) being able to read the hitters and being strong with her call of the games," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "After the first inning of game one, I thought our defense responded and competed hard for our pitchers."
Paige Scanlin belted a two-run homer in the seven-run first, and Pellet capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the fifth-run third. Pellet finished game two by going 3-for-3 with five runs batted in. Pellet was just a triple away from hitting for the cycle as the Lady Tigers finished with 12 hits in the nightcap.
Pellet leads Cowley with four home runs and 23 runs batted in, while Scanlin has hit three home runs to go along with 14 batted in.
Seminole's Graci Major (4-3) and Abagail Tovar each recorded only one out in the first inning before being chased from the game.
Cowley will play three games at the Branson Grand Slam Classic held Friday and Saturday in Branson, MO.
