Cowley College sophomore Mikah Vann continued her strong sophomore campaign by tossing a perfect game in the Lady Tiger softball team's doubleheader sweep of Independence on Monday. Vann struck out six of the 15 batters she retired in Cowley's 18-0 win of game one before the Tigers won the second road game by a score of 13-2.
Vann has gone the distance in her last five starts and is now 13-4 on the season. The left-hander benefited from an early lead as Cowley got a three-run homer from Krisyana Pellet in a four-run first inning.
"The way we came out swinging in the first game was a huge key for us and gave us a lot of momentum," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "I really felt it brought Mikah a lot of comfort in the circle to perform as strongly as she did. She did a great job of attacking their hitters early and throughout the game."
Paige Scanlin, who went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in, added a two-run homer in the second inning, and Raelynn Sandlin hit a two-run homer in the third. Cowley would go on to score nine runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to win 18-0.
Sophomore shortstop Taverli Tennant hit three doubles and drove in three runs, while Kanon Goji went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Cowley would continue to pour it on in game two as the Tigers scored in every inning of the doubleheader. Tennant led the Tigers' 21-hit parade by adding four more doubles, and Pellet homered for the second straight game, giving her eight on the season.
Lady Tiger starting pitcher Ezra Arredondo (9-3) allowed only one run in six innings before Madison Baker pitched the seventh in the 13-2 win.
Cowley (24-11) remains in a tie with Johnson County for third place in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division as both teams are 5-1. Kansas City currently leads the conference with a record of 8-0, and Neosho County is second at 6-0.
Cowley will remain on the road to play a doubleheader at Coffeyville on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Red Ravens are 7-15 overall
