Tennant, Carpenter help Cowley keep Pratt reeling
Getting home runs from Taverli Tennant and Carsen Carpenter in both games of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Pratt Community College, the No. 18-ranked Cowley College softball team run-ruled the Beavers 10-2 and 9-1.
Cowley improves its record to 5-3, while Pratt is now 1-11.
The Lady Tigers got a pair of two-run homers from Tennant and Carpenter in the first inning of game one and cruised to the 10-2, five-inning win. Cowley also got extra base hits from Taylor Clay, Kiki Warner, and Norah Macken as they out-hit Pratt 12-4.
Redshirt freshman Dacey Morris (2-1) earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and one earned run in five innings of work.
The Beavers' pitchers Karlie Johnson and Blair Shipman did not strike out a batter in the loss.
In game two, Carpenter again homered in a three-run first inning to help Cowley out to the early lead.
A two-run homer by Tennant in the top of the fifth inning increased the Lady Tigers' lead to 6-1, and Cowley never looked back in the five-inning win. Tennant is now batting .500 with four home runs and 10 runs batted in.
The homers were the first two of the season for Carpenter, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
"Offensively, we had a competitive day at the plate," Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. "Carsen really produced well for the team and was a tough out all day.
Kylie Cartwright (1-1) got the start on the mound for Cowley and allowed only three hits and one run in four innings pitched. However, Cartwright walked four and failed to record a strikeout. Madison Baker came on to pitch a 1-2-3 fifth inning to finish off the 9-1 win.
"In the circle, we really worked through the strike zone and didn't allow many hits on the day," Hoyt said. "I like how our defense really stepped up when having runners in scoring position, controlling the routine outs."
Pratt's Alyssa Montez (0-2) allowed nine hits and five earned runs in five innings pitched as her defense committed five errors in the defeat.
The Lady Tigers will play four games at the Murray State Roundrobin on Friday and Saturday. Cowley will open with a doubleheader against North Central Texas College (6-11) on Friday at noon before playing host Murray State in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. Murray State is ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II poll with a record of 20-0.
"This weekend will be another test for us, and we have to show up ready to compete," Hoyt said.
