Lady Tiger pitching blanks Pratt in a pair of games
Improving its record to 5-0 against Pratt Community College this season, the Cowley College softball team shut out the Beavers in both games of Monday’s doubleheader in Arkansas City. The Lady Tigers defeated Pratt 5-0 in game one before run-ruling the Beavers 8-0 in game two.
Cowley completed a 6-0 home stand to move over .500 on the season. The Lady Tigers are now 21-19 overall and 7-3 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
In game one, Cowley got a complete-game three-hit shutout from Dacey Morris. Morris struck out four and walked only one as she improved to 12-7 on the season.
Sophomore shortstop Taverli Tennant supplied all the offense Morris would need as she went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Freshmen Kiki Warner and Taylor Clay added two more hits.
In game two, Cowley scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first run came on a run-scoring double by Taverli Tennant before Warner doubled home two more.
Tennant would blast a solo home run off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, and Warner added another RBI double as Cowley scored three more runs in the third inning to lead 6-0. Warner finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in and is batting .736 (14-of-19) with 10 RBIs during her seven-game hitting streak.
Lady Tiger freshman Camrea Riley, who had a run-scoring single in the third inning, came through with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap the five-inning run-rule win of game two.
Freshman Hannah Howard (7-4) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win. Howard allowed only four hits and no walks while striking out three.
Taylor Clay went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored and has been equally dominant in her seven-game hitting streak, batting .652 (15-of-23) with seven runs batted in.
Tennant finished 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. She has driven in 15 runs in her past seven games and has multi-hit games in five of those. The sophomore is now batting .451 with 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in.
Three of Cowley's four shutouts on the season have come against Pratt, as the Beavers are now 6-31 on the season.
The Lady Tigers will attempt to continue their climb up the conference standings when they play a doubleheader at Highland on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Scotties are 12-24 and 1-5 in the conference.
