Redlands uses a big fourth quarter to surge past Lady Tigers 60-48
Opening its season by playing a second straight road game, the Cowley College women’s basketball team led after each of the first three quarters of play in its game at Redlands Community College on Wednesday in El Reno, OK, before the Cougars rallied for the 60-48 home win.
The Lady Tigers are now 1-1 on the season. On Wednesday, Cowley led 12-10 after the first quarter of play and extended its lead to 26-21 at the end of the first half.
Redlands chipped away at the Tigers' lead and pulled within 40-38 heading into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter was where the game turned, as Redlands outscored Cowley 22-8, rallying for a 12-point victory.
"We just kind of fell apart in that fourth quarter and played and acted like freshmen," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We need to learn how to fight through stuff."
Mallory Jackson, one of only two sophomores on the roster, battled foul trouble and eventually fouled out with seven points and three rebounds.
Cowley shot only 26.4 percent from the floor (14-53), while going just 4-of-19 from three-point range.
"It's tough to win games when you shoot it that poorly," Clark said. "
Freshman Aniyah Burney was the lone Tiger in double figures with 17 points. Fellow freshman Megan Simon added nine points and nine rebounds, but the Cowley bench combined for only six points on 1-of-9 shooting from the floor.
"I hope in the long run this will be an experience we will learn from," Clark said.
Cowley will return to Arkansas City and prepare to host Bethany College on Friday at 3 p.m.
"We need to play better, top to bottom, and play with more poise," Clark said.
