Lady Tigers remain unbeaten at home with 50-point win
Hosting the Kansas Wesleyan University JV on Thursday inside W.S. Scott Auditorium, the Cowley College women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 at home with a 95-45 victory over the Coyotes.
Cowley (4-1) used an 18-1 run to break an 11-11 tie and lead 29-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Tigers' lead grew to 49-18 at the end of the first half with Cowley shooting 59.4 percent from the floor. Cowley turned 19 Kansas Wesleyan turnovers into 23 first-half points.
With the commanding lead, Cowley head coach Todd Clark was able to play everyone on the roster.
"We accomplished what we wanted going in, and that was to get a lot of people minutes," Clark said.
A three-pointer by freshman Braylee Reed in the final seconds of the third quarter increased the Tigers' lead to 74-30.
Cowley had 13 players score in the 50-point victory.
Freshman Megan Simon scored a season-high 19 points, while sophomore Mallory Jackson added 14. The duo combined to shoot 13-of-18 from the floor as the Lady Tigers shot 59.7 percent (37-of-62).
"Megan is a hard worker who comes in and does her job," Clark said. "I thought she played really well."
Cowley had eight players come off the bench and get into the scoring column as the Lady Tigers got 46 bench points.
Kansas Wesleyan's Ayana Alvarez Holmes shot 6-of-8 from the floor, while the rest of the team combined to make only 7-of-42 attempts.
Cowley will look to avenge its lone defeat when it hosts Redlands Community College on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers lost at Redlands by a score of 60-48 in their second game of the season. The Cougars are 3-1 on the season.
"Redlands has a talented group and is a tough matchup for us," Clark said. "We need to come in ready to play and try to get them back."
