Physical Coffeyville squad picks up a 67-52 road win at Cowley
Unable to match No. 25-ranked Coffeyville’s physicality, the Cowley College women’s basketball team suffered a 67-52 home loss on Wednesday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Cowley hung tough for the first half, trailing 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and 32-25 at halftime.
Coffeyville shot 50 percent in the opening half, while forcing Cowley into 11 turnovers.
The Red Ravens busted the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Cowley 23-8 to take a commanding 55-33 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Lady Tigers would trail by as many as 26 points (59-33) before a 16-2 run pulled Cowley within 61-49 following a three-pointer by Amina Allen with 2:40 left to play. However, the Tigers could not make up for their 20 turnovers and being out-rebounded 32-21 as they went on to lose by 15.
"We got killed on the boards," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "They were way more physical than we were, and we turned it over too much. Just not a very good performance."
The loss drops Cowley's record to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Jayhawk Conference, while Coffeyville improves to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Freshman Aniyah Burney came off the bench to lead Cowley with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting before fouling out. Fellow freshman Saliyah Henderson-Johnson added 14 points and 11 rebounds. However, the rest of the team combined for only 20 points on 8-of-31 shooting from the floor.
Aubrey Hishaw, a 6'0 sophomore from Tulsa, OK, led Coffeyville with 19 points, while Karliey Parker added 10 points and 10 boards.
Cowley will face another tough test when they play at No. 19-ranked Hutchinson on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Blue Dragons are 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.
