Lady Tigers can’t keep up with No. 19 Hutchinson in 74-53 road defeat
Playing at No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College on Saturday, the Cowley College women’s basketball team hung tough for a half before the Lady Blue Dragons were able to pull away for the 74-53 win.
Hutchinson, winners of four games in a row, had four players score in double figures as they improved to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Cowley has dropped two games in a row and is now 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Things started well for the Lady Tigers as Cowley led 13-10 following an Amina Allen three-pointer, and they were tied with Hutchinson at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Dragons would out-score Cowley 18-11 in the second quarter to take a 33-26 halftime lead.
After the Lady Tigers pulled within 35-33 early in the third quarter, Hutchinson would use a 12-0 run to take control as they went into the fourth quarter with a 56-44 advantage.
The Blue Dragons' lead would grow to as many as 25 points (73-48) in the 21-point home win. Six of Hutchinson's 10 wins have come by 20 points or more.
"We were competitive early and then let the game get away from us, which was extremely disappointing," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.
Cowley shot just 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor, while making only 4-of-21 shots from beyond the arc.
The Lady Tigers are averaging 78.5 points in the team's six wins and only 51.6 in their five losses.
Megan Simon led Cowley with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Amina Allen added 12 points on 3-of-8 shooting from three-point range.
Katie Duncan's 15 points led Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons shot 45.2 percent from the floor and went 9-of-29 from three-point range. Hutchinson also out-rebounded Cowley 42-29.
"We got killed on the boards," Clark said. "It is hard to win when you get out-rebounded as we did."
Cowley will return home to face Pratt on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Beavers are 6-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
"Pratt is much improved, so we will need to play well," Clark said.
