Simon’s big game helps Cowley win second straight road game
Getting a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds from freshman Megan Simon, the Cowley College women’s basketball team cruised to an easy 88-66 win at lowly Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Sunday in Goodland, KS.
Winners of two games in a row, the Lady Tigers (12-13) remain one game out of eighth place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 8-11. Fort Hays Tech NW falls to 2-23 overall and 2-17 in the conference.
Trailing 11-10 midway through the first quarter, Cowley began to heat up as they closed the quarter on a 19-8 run to lead 29-19. Freshman Naya Burleson would score eight of her 15 points in the opening quarter.
The Lady Tigers would go on to score the first five points of the second quarter and led by as many as 18 points before going into halftime with a comfortable 50-34 lead.
Fort Hays Tech NW would pull within 61-49 following a three-pointer by Al'Asia Brown with 3:32 left in the third quarter, but Cowley answered with a 10-0 run and was never threatened again in the 22-point road win.
The 88 points are the most Cowley has scored since a 92-51 win over Fort Hays Tech on December 13 in Ark City.
Simon shot 10-of-15 from the floor and was one of four Tigers in double figures.
Aniyah Burney added 18 points, and Mallory Jackson finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds as Cowley out-rebounded Fort Hays Tech 41-22.
"It was a good team win," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "We had a lot of people contribute."
Taisiia Vypovska's 16 points led Fort Hays Tech.
Cowley will return home to face Garden City on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the team's Homecoming Game. The Broncbusters (15-9) have dropped two games in a row to fall to 10-8 in the conference. The Tigers dropped a hard-fought 62-58 contest at Garden City on January 3.
