Grizzlies snap Lady Tigers' win streak with 73-47 road win
The No. 2-ranked Butler Lady Grizzlies used a 17-2 run to end the first quarter of their game at Cowley College on Saturday, taking control and never looking back in the 73-47 road win.
Things started well for the Tigers as they forced Butler into an early timeout with the Grizzlies trailing 10-6. However, Butler would rally to lead 23-12 after one quarter of play.
Trailing 31-21 at the end of the first half, things went south for Cowley in the third quarter as Butler outscored the Lady Tigers 25-6 to lead 56-27.
The Grizzlies' lead would grow to 37 points (68-31) as they won their 17th game in a row. Butler is now 26-1 overall and 20-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.
"I was really disappointed with our effort," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "I thought we played scared. Butler just dominated us."
Butler's Ashley Singhateh led a balanced Grizzly attack with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Megan Simon led Cowley with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Zuzanna Komor came off the bench to finish with 10 points. Aniyah Burney, who entered the game averaging over 16 points per game, was held to three points on 1-of-12 shooting.
Butler held Cowley to 35.7 percent shooting and forced the Lady Tigers into 20 turnovers.
Cowley had its three-game win streak snapped and is now 13-14 overall and 9-12 in the conference.
The Lady Tigers will have a chance to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they play at last-place Independence Community College. The Pirates (5-22) are 2-19 in the conference and are 0-10 at home.
