Cortes scores twice, Cowley battles to a 2-2 tie at Butler
The No. 7-ranked Cowley College women’s soccer team rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 tie at Butler Community College on Saturday in El Dorado, KS.
Cowley (7-0-4) remains unbeaten and in first place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 7-0-3. The Grizzlies (9-2-2) are in second place in the conference with a record of 6-2-2.
Butler struck first when sophomore London Ingram scored less than six minutes into Saturday's contest.
"Butler came out really strong, like we knew they would," Cowley assistant coach Eusebio "Chevy" Plaza.
Cowley answered with 26:14 remaining in the first half, as Sara Cortes scored off a pass from Saki Sanno to tie the game at 1-1.
Ingram would add a second first-half goal, this time scoring off an assist from Naho Yamamura to give Butler a 2-1 halftime lead. Ingram leads Butler with six goals on the season.
"We played well in the first half, with a couple of shots hitting the post and going against adversity to tie the game," Plaza said.
The score would remain that way until Cortes scored with 16:01 remaining to tie the game at 2-2. Despite several chances, Cowley could not regain the lead, and the match ended in a draw.
Cortes leads Cowley with 11 goals in 11 games.
"Sara was key to the game," Plaza said. "I am proud of how she fought for every ball."
The Lady Tigers outshot Butler 18-6, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Cowley will host Garden City on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Broncbusters are 9-4-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the conference.
