Lady Tiger tennis team dominates region tournament

The Cowley College women's tennis team appears poised to defend its national title as it ran through the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships in Pratt, KS, on Wednesday and Thursday.

The No. 2-ranked Lady Tigers got region titles from all three doubles teams and five of six singles players.

"It was a great tournament for us, it showed how consistent and competitive our team is," Cowley head coach Marcel Miasato said.

The Lady Tigers enter the national tournament May 3-7 in Tyler, TX, playing their best tennis of the season.

"We are excited to compete in the national tournament next week," Miasato said. "All of the girls are motivated and looking for more."

*No. 1 – Serena Pereyra/Kendra Arostegui (CC) defeated Russell/Smaalders (Pratt) 6-0, 6-0; defeated Petton/Oborocea (Seward) 6-1, 6-1 in region championship.

*No. 2 – Akari Tomoyose/Chiho Takada (CC) defeated Souza/Seejong (Barton) 6-1, 6-0; defeated Mogi/Bailetti (Seward) due to injury retirement in region championship.

*No. 3 – Cynthia Wanjala/Naghely Garcia Galian (CC) received a bye in the first round; defeated Petersille/Pauly (Pratt) 6-0, 6-0 in region championship; defeated Petersille/Pauly (Pratt) 6-0, 6-0 in region championship.

SINGLES

*No. 1 – Pereyra (CC) defeated Dotse (Barton) 6-0, 6-1; defeated Pelton (Seward) 6-2, 6-1 in region championship.

*No. 2 – Tomoyose (CC) defeated Smaalders (Pratt) 6-3, 6-1; defeated Mogi (Seward) 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in region championship.

*No. 3 – Wanjala (CC) defeated Souza (Barton) 6-0, 6-0; defeated Oborocea (Seward) 6-3, 6-1 in region championship.

*No. 4 – Garcia-Galian (CC) defeated Seejong (Barton) 6-0, 6-0; defeated Bailetti (Seward) 7-5, 6-0 in region championship.

*No. 5 – Takada (CC) defeated Petersille (Pratt) 6-0, 6-0; lost to Ramirez Botella (Seward) 0-6, 2-6 in region championship.

*No. 6 – Arostegui (CC) received a bye in the first round; defeated Achala (Pratt) 6-0, 6-0 in the region championship.
