No. 1-ranked Lady Tigers get unexpected test from Kansas Wesleyan JV
The top-ranked Cowley College volleyball team rarely drops a set at home. Although it did not lose a set in its home match against the Kansas Wesleyan University JV on Wednesday, the Lady Tigers were challenged by the Coyotes in a 25-12, 28-26, 25-18 win.
The victory improves Cowley's record to 3-0 on the season and extends the Lady Tigers' winning streak to 84 matches in a row.
Wednesday's match started with the Lady Tigers scoring the first eight points of set one and cruising to the 25-12 victory.
Set two is where things got interesting. The set featured 19 ties and 11 lead changes and forced Cowley head coach Steven Gream to call a pair of timeouts before the Lady Tigers were able to prevail 28-26.
"We don't win that second set without Ashlynn Jaccard," Gream said.
It looked like Cowley would assert its dominance in set three as it raced out to a 9-2 lead. However, the Coyotes pulled within 11-9 before Cowley scored six straight points and went on to the 25-18 win.
"Kansas Wesleyan is not your typical JV team; they came to play," Gream said. "But, we also kind of let our guard down a little bit and did not do a good job putting them away."
Jaccard led Cowley with 11 kills and a .562 hitting percentage. Brooklyn Wuest and Callie Parker added six kills for the Lady Tigers, while Hanna Darvas had a double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs.
"Hanna is still trying to get used to the hitters, but still manages to put us in good spots to win," Gream said.
Cowley will play a pair of road matches this weekend in Nebraska, beginning with a match at No. 19-ranked Central Community College on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a match at Northeast Community College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
"Central always plays us well, they know us and we know them," Gream said. "Northeast is also a talented team and gave us a run when we played them last year. We just need to be us, cut down on our unforced errors, and execute on our end, and things will take care of themselves."
