Lady Tigers defeat a ranked opponent, go 2-0 in Nebraska
Playing on the road for the first time this season, the No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team went 2-0 over the weekend in Nebraska. The Lady Tigers opened with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 win over No. 19-ranked Central Nebraska on Friday before defeating Northeast Community College 26-24, 25-18, 25-16 on Saturday.
Cowley is now 5-0 on the season and has extended its winning streak to 86 matches in a row.
"We are getting better every day," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said. "Getting tested on the road shows us where we are at this point in the season. It was good to play two quality teams on their home courts."
On Friday, Lady Tiger freshman Lana Gomilanovic had her best performance of the young season, finishing with 13 kills and 10 digs. Fellow freshman Teo Cekan added 11 kills, while Ashlynn Jaccard and Brooklyn Wuest added seven kills apiece. Sophomore setter Hanna Darvas chipped in with 35 assists.
In the win over Northeast CC, Gomilanovic again led the way with 11 kills. Cassie Ellegood and West added 10 kills apiece as Cowley spread the wealth.
Darvas finished with 38 assists, and Cekan chipped in with nine kills. Freshman Sabrina Scariot also played well, finishing with four of Cowley's 13 aces in the win over Northeast CC.
"The match with Northeast was back and forth. Our serve really was the difference for us," Gream said. "We had a lot of people step up on the weekend."
Cowley will return home to play its conference opener against Coffeyville (3-8) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Tiger fans are asked to wear white to the contest and help White Out W.S. Scott Auditorium.
"Every game is important, especially a conference one," Gream said. "We need to make sure we are prepared and do not let our guard down."
