Lady Tigers overcome tough test from Seminole State College
The No. 1-ranked Cowley College volleyball team bounced back from dropping its first set of the season to defeat Seminole State College 25-22, 19-25, 25-12, 25-16 on Thursday night inside W.S. Scott Auditorium.
The Lady Tigers improve to 8-0 on the season, while Seminole State falls to 7-6.
"Seminole is much improved, but on the flip side, I thought we had way too many unforced errors that kept them in the game," Cowley head coach Steven Gream said.
In set one, Cowley trailed 12-9 before rattling off six straight points to lead 15-12. Seminole would pull within 20-19, but the Lady Tigers would hold on for the 25-22 win.
Set two was back-and-forth with Seminole State holding a slim 12-11 lead before scoring seven of the next eight points to grab control at 18-12 en route to the 25-19 win.
The teams were then tied at 7-7 in set three before the Tigers woke up and scored 15 of the next 20 points and cruised to the 25-12 victory.
Cowley continued to pour it on in set four, leading 19-9 on the way to the 25-16 win.
Cowley finished with eight service aces, but also a season-high 17 service errors.
"I don't worry about missed serves too much, but when you have six missed serves in a set, it's not acceptable," Gream said.
Sophomore outside hitter Josci Buckley, who missed the first four matches of the season due to injury, continues to show progress and finished with a career-high 18 kills in the victory.
"Josci bounced back from a rough night against Independence the night before, and was more in rhythm against Seminole," Gream said. "This is the first step of her getting back to where she was before the injury."
Freshman Lana Gomilanovic added a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Ashlynn Jaccard made the most of her 10 attacks by finishing with seven kills and seven digs.
"Ashlynn has been solid all year long," Gream said. "She is hard to defend because she can do so many different things."
Tessa Mossburg led the Lady Tigers with 16 digs, while Hanna Darvas had a season-high 48 assists.
Cowley will face another challenge when they play at conference rival and No. 5-ranked Johnson County on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The contest will be a rematch of last year's national championship match that Cowley won in four sets.
"Both teams know each other very well and expect a good game," Gream said. "We need to play Cowley volleyball."
