Weber tosses no-hitter in pair of home wins

Cowley College right-handed pitcher Aaron Weber continued his strong freshman campaign by tossing a five-inning no-hitter against Fort Scott Saturday in Arkansas City. Weber allowed only two baserunners in the Tigers' 10-0 win of Saturday's opener. Cowley would win the nightcap 14-7 to take three of four games in the series.

The No. 12-ranked Tigers (27-7) remain one game behind Kansas City Kansas Community College (14-2) in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division standings with a conference record of 17-3.

Weber plunked the first batter of the game before retiring 14 batters in a row. He struck out seven and walked one. Weber (6-0) has yet to lose this season as he tied Grant Adler for the most wins on the pitching staff.

"Weber was dominant. He did a good job of controlling the strike zone," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said.

Sophomore third baseman Trey DeGarmo went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored, while Bryce Madron and Janson Reeder homered in the run-rule victory.

Reeder would homer again in game two as would designated hitter Logan Vaughan. The duo drove in three runs apiece, while DeGarmo added two more doubles and three more runs scored.

"Trey has been trying to learn who he is at the plate and has been doing a good job of staying within himself," Burroughs said.

Chance Cox went the first four innings of game two and allowed two hits and one run, to go along with six strikeouts. He left the game with the Tigers' leading 6-1. However, Fort Scott would tie the game at 6-6 by scoring five runs off three Cowley relievers in the top of the sixth inning. Evann Long's grand slam capped the five-run fifth for the Greyhounds.

Logan Vaughan helped regain the lead for the Tigers by belting his second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Cowley would tack on two more runs in the seventh inning before blowing the game open with a four-run eighth.

Carson Pierce, the fourth Tiger pitcher used in the game, earned the victory as he allowed only one run and two hits in 2 2/3 innings pitched. The right-hander struck out three and walked none as he evened his record at 1-1.

Five Greyhound pitchers combined to allow 12 hits and 12 walks in the 14-7 loss. Fort Scott is now 22-14 overall and 10-6 in the Jayhawk East.

Cowley will play a nine-inning game at Hutchinson (19-15) Tuesday at 2 p.m. before returning home to play a doubleheader against Johnson County (29-9) Thursday at 1 p.m.

"It will be good to play another solid opponent before facing Johnson," Burroughs said. "We hope to keep improving each day."
