The Cowley College women's and men's track and field teams were led by a combined eight conference champions and four region champs as the Lady Tigers captured the conference title and the men finished second at the Outdoor Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships held this past weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville, KS.
The Lady Tigers brought home three individual region champions while placing fourth in the region as a team and winning the 56th conference championship in the program's history. Region champs were Mercedes Glover in the hammer, Cierra Gray in the shot put, and Kennedy Kizarr in the pole vault.
Just behind Kizarr were Dakota Dapper and Elizabeth Brozek, who placed third and fourth, respectively.
The Cowley vaulters swept both events, with Dagen Geier winning the men's pole vault.
"Having a 1-2-3 punch in the vault is something we strive for every year," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said. "This year, with Dakota, Kennedy, and Elizabeth, it may be the best we have had so far."
The women also won the shot put, where the team went 1-2-3 in the event. Cierra Gray placed first, Amani Evens, and Jessi McDowell finished second and third, respectively.
Cowley College throws coach, Glenwood Edwards, was named the KJCCC Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
"Hats off to our Lady Tigers for winning the conference championship," Rieth said. "We make that a goal for ourselves every year, and our ladies were able to get it done for both indoor and outdoor this year, which does not happen very often."
The Tiger men, which finished fifth in the region, were led by Dagen Geier, the conference and region champion in the pole vault. Ranaldo Hanna (long jump) and Victor Morfin (high jump) were other conference champs for the Tigers.
The Tiger track and field teams will be back in action at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Hutchinson Community College on May 15-17.
